Fear the 9-to-5!

Monday, September 7th, 2009
During my morning shower, my mind tends to wander. Usually this involves coming up with plots, tweaking plots, figuring my way around difficult plots or quietly talking to myself as I work out a dialogue string.

However, every now and then my mind wanders to more obscure places. Two days ago, for example, I concluded that people do not go to war. Countries do not go to war. Governments go to war. And they do so for one reason and one reason only: Power. Whether it be to secure it or steal it, all wars boil down to a government’s desire for power (can you think of one that doesn’t?).

This morning, I was thinking about work; specifically, 9-to-5 office work. My maths may be a little rusty (not to mention rushed; I was in the shower), but I worked out that, based on a someone leaving university at 21 and getting a job in an office that lasts till their retirement at 65, the average person will have about 11 years to themselves. 11 years in which to do whatever they want. That’s taking into account evenings, weekends, holidays and bank holidays (yes, people, I was working it out in hours).

That means, the average person working in an office, from the time they leave university to the day they retire, will spend around 33 years sleeping, getting ready for work, travelling to work, working and travelling from work. There are murders who don’t get that kind of sentence!

Okay, so that doesn’t take into account lunch-breaks, but nor does it factor in time spent on the toilet or time spent in traffic jams when not commuting, or time you give up for other people, and so on…

Not only is that three quarters of that period of life gone, but it’s more than half of your entire life to that point (and that’s not counting school)!

So, the next time you’re looking at that contract for that comfortable, secure job with that big, reputable company, just think about how much of your life you’re signing away.

Remember Me?

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

This has been a dismal summer in which I’ve been bereft of motivation, inspiration and energy, and have been far too lazy to do anything.  The only thing that has been on my mind since finishing  my first year is starting my second, and only Facebook, World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy VII have kept me sane.

Speaking of WoW: Cataclysm

Ooh, yes indeedy :D

It hasn’t been all bad.  Last weekend saw my first night out all summer, for my cousin’s birthday.  We went to the dogs, placed a few bets, won nothing, but made up for it by scoring some drinks vouchers :)   We then hit the town, danced a little, drank much and ended up in a B&B (which we neglected to check into).  With four of us and only two beds, I happily opted for the wooden floor, with only a pillow for comfort.  Thanks to copious amounts of alcohol, I slept rather well and was feeling good the next morning, partially thanks to a cup of tea and a McDonald’s breakfast.

In retrospect, I think I was still drunk.  A gopping hangover hit later in the day and I still felt like hell the following day.  Perhaps I’m just getting old…

My once faithful metabolism has also been slack of late, resulting in a gut :/  Though I’m sure inactivity hasn’t helped.

However, two weeks from today I move back to Cheltenham and into my new student digs!  My modules are chosen, my timetable’s set, my finances are secured, the first couple of nights out are arranged and I can’t wait!!  Next year, I’m going to have to find a way of staying in Cheltenham over the summer.  Alas, that will likely involve getting a…*ulp*…job…

One Down; Two to Go

Years, that is :)

Yes, folks, that time has finally arrived; my first year of university is complete!

Okay, so I did complete a year before, but this time I’ve actually passed!

Well, in all pobability I’ve passed.  It’s yet to be official, but unless some major catastrophe has befallen the script I wrote a few weeks back or the exam I sat today (it didn’t exactly go swimmingly, but I’m relatively sure it was good enough), then I shall be moving on to my first second year of uni!

My three core modules – Imaginary and Real Worlds, Prose Fundamentals and Playwriting Fundamentals - went as well as could be expected with solid 2-1s in each.  In fact, considering how the first two started (50% and 57% respectively), nailing a 2-1 in either was a miracle.

’tis now time to bow my head and apologise for my lack of presence around here of late.  It’s not like I haven’t had the time (technically I should’ve been revising, but my procrastination knows no bounds); I’ve just found it far too easy to switch off and vegitate at the controls of my Xbox.  Nights have mostly been spent watching DVDs with housemates (some of them actually needed introducing to the Alien films (McSpanky, you’ll get your chance)) or partying.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), there seems to be little to catch up on.  Deej and Mr. E appear to have kept up the good work, and there will, of course, be reems upon reems of Little Miss Gypo’s updates to get through, but the rest of you seem to have been slacking almost as much as I have (though I imagine your comment contributions are considerably higher).

Now it’s time for bed.  A cold has reared is ugly, mucus-dripping head at the worst possible time, and I need to finish my hot toddy and get some rest so’s I can wake up bright and fresh and set about pummelling the little bugger with soup, coffee and as much food as I cram in.

Hope this finds you all well and I’ll be back with more, sooooon…

Away

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

’tis that time again.  The second semester has ended and I’m for another 3 week jaunt back home.  Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll have net access while there :(

Given my lacking presence of late, that probably won’t make a lot of difference, but just so you know.  Don’t want any of you thinking I’ve died… ;)

A Bit More Like Home

For those out there who, like me, have been mirroring their efx2 blog on blogger for the past several months/year, go use the import tool; is quick and easy :D

Sadly, I still haven’t figured out how to embed vids on this yet, so a lot of my old posts will likely be blank, but it’s still nice to have them here.

A Sober St. Paddy’s Day :(

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Though celebrating the patron saint of Ireland, there’s no denying St. Patrick’s Day has become an international celebration.  Okay, so that’s mainly down to its use as an excuse to get paraletic on Guiness/whisky, but it’s still an admirable feat.

Being a student and surrounded by pubs, it should have been a given that St. Paddy’s day would be spent getting boozed and slurring along to the best of The Pogues in a bad Irish accent.  Sadly, this wasn’t to be.  Pending deadlines and dwindling funds meant the majority of us were stuck at home, able at best to toast dear Patrick with whatever we had in the fridge (in my case, a couple of bottles of Beck’s).

Besides which, as with most celebrations, St. Patrick’s Day isn’t given the gusto it deserves on this side of the pond.  Yet another reason I’d love to live in New York.

Hmm…how does one ad vids to this thing?  It doesn’t seem overly fond of embed coding…

New Digs

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

And so, here we are, at it again.  Cheap as it may be, I figured I might as well copy over the last (re)introductory post I wrote, seeing as it wasn’t written too long ago:

Um…hullo…?

This thing on…?

Testing, 1, 2, testing…

*ahem*

My name’s Bebbet, (aka Michael). I’m a 28 year-old Creative Writing student from Sunderland, UK, currently studying in Cheltenham.

I’m 5’10″, 11st. Brown hair. Blue eyes. Slim build. Pasty complexion.

Intersts include writing, reading, films, music, Xbox, eating, Capoeira, coffee, whiskey and socialising.

I have a full driver’s license (3 points), plenty of office experience and hope one day to make a living as a novellist.

Okay, now that reintroductions are out of the way; Hi! :)

Yes, it has been some time since I last posted here, beyond the occasional trailer or music vid. It’s ironice really, seeing as I now have a social life. I posted more frequently when I was bereft.

So, yes. Here I am, still at university. Not only that, but I’m doing well!

Well, when I say well; I’m doing okay. My results range from a high of 75% to a low of 50% and I’m currently averaging just below a B grade, but I’m hoping my next few assignments will raise that. Annoyingly, my biggest struggle has been in the two modules I should’ve found the easiest. The problem isn’t so much the writing (though what I handed in last semester was far from my best work), it’s this thing called a Reflective Critical Understanding, whereby I must talk about the influences behind the piece (thin, seeing as I don’t read nearly as much as I should) and the processes and techniques I used when writing it (thinner, seeing as I tend to start writing and see what occurs). Fortunately, now that I’m settled, getting the hang of reviewing my own work and have a broader genre scope to work with, the next assignments for those modules should be far stronger.

Elsewhere, things are faring better. I’ve had to take two Literature modules to fill the yearly requirement, but I got through the first okay, and the second’s going well. I’m taking Screenwriting this semester, which is fun (according to our lecturer, the average mark for the last assignment was mid 50s – which, for a class doing its very first Screenwriting assignment, is a good average – and anyone in the 60s is doing excellently. I got 64% *smug* :) and continuing with Playwriting, which I only took because Screenwriting wasn’t available last semester, but which has turned out to be my strongest module (I apparently have a gift for dialogue).

In terms of personal life; I have one! w00t!! It has slowed a little this semester on account of money being scarce, but I’m still having fun.

The future holds more work and more fun and, hopefully, more posting than I’ve managed in the past few months.

Birthday (lack of) Shenanigans

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008
And so another year has rolled by; this one – unlike many that have come before it – an eventful one, from completeing college, to starting university, and all of the random crap inbetween.

Alas, this birthday – unlike the previous few – is less than eventful. Last year I was in Surrey for a small birthday shindig, followed by a Bond-themed New Year’s Eve party, with much drinking and fun on the Wii. The year before that we were in the Black Forest, partaking in some karaoke (which I haven’t done since, but want to as it’s fun).

This year, I’m at home, having a beer and preparing to watch some DVDs, bought with some of the money I got off my dad (the rest will likely go towards a night out when I’m back in Cheltenham). Though tempted by a few, I eventually settled on just four: The City of Lost Children (an old favourite), Police Squad: The Complete Series (an older favourite), Sweeney Todd (recent genius) and Iron Man (recent greatness (watch the vid – not just another trailer).

I also got a fancy shower-gel assortment, a box of posh chocs and whiskey gift-set off friends.

Speaking of friends; it’s a pain in the arse being hundreds of miles away from any of them, again. Hence the quiet night in. But, hey-ho; plenty of time to make for it in the new year…

It’s official: Americans aren’t quite as dumb as we all thought.

Good for you.

Just Another Reason Why I Love New York
